Item specifics are: 15 CHEVROLET LEADER NEWS NEWSREELS ON DVD Chevrolet Leader News Newsreels were promotional newsreels featuring a variety of Chevrolet-centric stories. Film 1: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 1, No. 1) (1935) B&W Runtime 8:08 1st news clip features the building of the Colorado dam. It's quite an impressive dam, lots of heavy dirt being carted away on... Chevrolet Vehicles! 2nd news clip offers a race between an ice boat and a... Chevrolet Vehicle! Guess who wins? 3rd News Clip offers a great new device: Hang what appears to be a bug light on your rear view mirror of your... Chevrolet Vehicle! and keep track of your gas mileage! Gee, how exciting! 4th clip details the great American Soap Box Derby and the preparations the competitors go through.. Sponsored by.... Chevrolet Vehicles! 5th offers the latest up to the date hairdos for the fashionable woman. I sorta liked the Merry Widow one. The models then all leave in a... Chevrolet Vehicle! (cheap process shot alert!) And finally 6th features nothing but a dog being stuffed into the glove compartment of a.. Chevrolet Vehicle! Why? Who knows. Film 2: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 1, No. 2) (1935) B&W Runtime 6:16 This newsreel starts off by showcasing the bridging of the islands in Key West Florida. The only way to get across before was by train. But, in a scary sequence, a... Chevrolet Vehicle! can get along the thin railroad truck just fine! The 2nd piece showcases.. Chevrolet Vehicles! oldest employees and to explains to the people that Chevrolet was excited to give the key to the city to them. Judging my the looks of the faces on some of the employees, the feeling wasn't mutual. The next piece, in continuing a disturbing practice, of shoving animals into cars. A father pushes a Shetland horse into a... Chevrolet Vehicle!, and takes it to the beach so his son can ride it???? The marvels of a bus-train is featured in the next segment. It was sort of unusual. But I'm still puzzled why such a... Chevrolet Vehicle! such as that would be needed. Older car advertisements are featured in the next segment for our amusement. Ho ho ho! Anyways.. The next segment features a... Chevrolet Vehicle! going through "the narrowest street in North America". Ooookay... Finally, the piece ends off with 20 girls piled on a.. Chevrolet Vehicle. Film 3: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 1, No. 3) (1935) B&W Runtime 8:19 First clip features feverish construction, with all sorts of lumber and cement being put on.... Chevrolet Vehicles! We then go to another clip that reports on the oldest houses in the United States. Fairly standard stuff. Parking right beside it is a.. Chevrolet Vehicle! Clip 3 is similar to one in an early film as we giggle at some older automobile advertisements. Clip 4 features a weird vehicle. Nothing really more to say. Clip 5 features rather unattractive models showing off jewelry. "New is the transportation bracelet, perhaps worn when one wants to go places".. especially in...Chevrolet Vehicles! We then see, in clip 6 army convoys going up and down.. in Chevrolet Vehicles! They're not really DOING anything, just going up and down. Film 4: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 2, No. 1) (1936) B&W Runtime 8:27 Volume 2 starts off with a overview of some pretty fashions for the year of 1936. More fashionable if you had a... Chevrolet Vehicle! to show it off in! We then turn to the slopes, where skiers and sledders, after arriving in their.. Chevrolet Vehicle! take to the hills. Not much to report here. Once again, Chevrolet entertains the masses and horrifies animal lovers by putting animals in precarious situations in the next clip. In this case, stuffing 2 hunting dogs in the trunk of a car. Why? Who knows. A cute young ones driving school is then profiled, with little cars and bikes learning to stop on red. We then go to the next clip where an High School Aviation project, a glider, (we never got to make gliders in High School!!) takes to the sky after being pulled by a.... Chevrolet Vehicle! Finally, the crowd erupts in laughter as a chimpanzee takes to the steering wheel of a... Chevrolet Vehicle! and "drives". Why? Who knows... Film 5: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 2, No. 2) (1936) B&W Runtime 8:15 We start off by viewing a girl surfing on sand while being pulled by a... Chevrolet Vehicle! she wipes out head first! Ouch! We then see another group of girls on the car, with the same surfing girl being pulled behind. Next Clip is a race where the winner of it gets to choose the name of the town they're racing to, and that winner names it... Chevrolet! A fascinating clip follows, as cops in... Chevrolet Vehicles! train to shoot stationary targets in moving vehicles. " A hit and run is now a Hit and Drive!" uh huh. Continuing this morbid habit of featuring weird animals in.. Chevrolet Vehicles!. This film features a wrestler and his partner, an alligator. Scenes of alligator wrestling ensues. After that, the wonderful invention that, according to this film, is welcomed by everyone, the parking meter, is featured. 5 cents for 30 min.. pretty good. The final clip here is a diving demonstration, with a pretty good crowd! Not too sure why diving demonstration and pool follies aren't around anymore. Film 6: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 2, No. 3) (1936) B&W Runtime 9:07 The first clip contains beautiful girls sliding off a slide connected to a... Chevrolet Automobile! Notice closely as some of the girls don't want to get TOO wet... We then follow that with an unremarkable scene of beauties diving off a car into a curiously half full pool. Make sure the roof doesn't get slippery! The next scene features a older couple who seem to have the oldest Chevrolet on the road. The car has been humming along costing very little to repair and maintain. What do the Chevrolet people do? They give them a brand new car! Why? Who knows. What do they do with the old car? That's undetermined. Jack Dempsey referees an amateur boxing competition in the next clip. which shows young kids wailing away on each other. Surely entertaining the masses. Curiously the masses' sound level remains stagnant all throughout the clip. A really TALL assembly guy. In the next clip. Inspects roofs. Supposedly he's 23. He LOOKS 40. next. In continuing their practice of showing animals needlessly suffering in cars, we get two examples of this in this film. Clip one features a novel idea of fishing. Just drive your.. Chevrolet Automobile! into the river and pick off all the smelter as you can. The next clip features dogs. Uh oh. Once again, Dogs are mercilessly stuffed into trunks and then brought out to a tea party. This is too funny as half the kids are trying like hell to control the mutts. The final scene shows one dog being THROWN onto the table. Really, literally, You can see the hands from off camera lobbing the dog onto it. The dog rebounds off the other side. Why? Who knows. Film 7: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 2, No. 4) (1936) B&W Runtime 9:00 First clip is a.. Chevrolet Automobile! attached to a boudoir so that the women can change on the WAY to the beach. MAN, what a great idea! The talking car of the future (very 1984ish) warns passengers to OBEY! Next up we see a plane competition, quite fun to watch. In a boring scientific clip, we see men hunting for oil, using explosives and seismology machines. Ho-kay. The next clip features a man who had a brilliant idea to change his... Chevrolet Automobile! into a boat. What I want to see is someone change a boat into a car.. The final clip somewhat disappointed me, when I saw the cat, as it didn't fulfill my expectation to see it chucked in, on top of, stuffed into or strapped on to a.. Chevrolet Automobile! Instead, we see a firehouse cat named Mickey, who watches the Firefighter play dominoes UNTIL... the fireball rings! All the firemen jump to action and slides down the poles. In a scene that I wowed out, Mickey HURLS down that pole as well. They're off to the fire, and that ends this film! Film 8: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 3, No. 1) (1937) B&W Runtime 9:13 Seems to focus on stories a little longer this time out, as there was only 5 subjects this time.. Cute swimsuit models frolic in the sand throwing a ball around (they're throwing, but none of them are catching!), they they pile on to a.. chevrolet vehicle! to frolic in the snow, still in their bathing suits. Uh huh, The next clip features the opening of the San Francisco Bridge. Kind of cool to see the opening. The piece after that concerns the trapping of 'the stupidest animal on earth', Lobsters. Hey, they're getting a bad rap here, man! The final piece is about a gourmet dog food company, and what goes in it, and the delivery to the dogs. Film 9: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 3, No. 2) (1937) B&W Runtime 8:05 Volume 3, No. 2. And this is the best one so far, as it mixes the usual (Cars, bikinied women, animal cruelty) with interesting stories. The first snippet is probably the most questionable 'story' ever captured by these reels. The capture of a live sea turtle. This is really hard to watch. It's then tied to the roof of a car to go to market. Next is a feature about the transport of traffic horses to their destination via a special vehicle. Nothing too special. Next up is a truly funny segment which probably shouldn't be tried at home. A trick golfer takes shots off a car, a MOVING car, a models toe, and um, shoots balls directly at the models. The Dust bowl of Texas is featured next, probably to tone things down. The miracles of water drilling is discussed. Moving on. Film 10: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 3, No. 3) (1937) B&W Runtime 8:29 The first short features the students of Purdue and their bands, they are shown exercising, and their military prowess (at a college?) 2nd: Drive thru banking, what was then a new idea is shown. it's highly interesting to see what kind of care was put into the preparation of the window in order to minimize crime. But what was going to be done-a about the REALLY bad Italian accent? 3rd, The Boy Scout Jamboree is shown, with lots of demonstrations of knot tying, fighting. 4th, A... Chevrolet Automobile! has this contraption on it that lets acrobats go around and around... ooookay. Just when i thought it was going to be animal cruelty free, along comes the performing chimp wagon! (I just shook my head at the sight of it, realizing what was coming up next) sure enough, monkeys are made to put on clothes, put on makeup (??!!) and forced to perform for the kids! Film 11: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 3, No. 4) (1937) B&W Runtime 6:19 First clip is of a travelling barber who goes to trailer park to trailer park. We then see a clip of an unusual train/bus combo. Looks like an interesting idea, wonder why something like that isn't used today (like for remoter areas) We then see.. Yes! A firefighting dog! He rides along with the firemen ringing the bell, and dangerously climbing a ladder to rescue a girl's DOLL (???!!). Why? Who knows. We don't see the dog flying down the pole though (as shown with the firefighting kitten in a previous film) Traffic reports from the sky is then shown. It looks to be like a newer idea as evident here. Passable. Finally, a regatta boat race is shown. Film 12: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 4, No. 1) (1938) B&W Runtime 7:29 Volume 4 starts off with a story about being a model. Somewhat interesting as photographic processes of 1937 is shown. Next up, two somewhat blah stories: One about how diamonds are not just pretty jewelry, but also needed for heavy duty machinery. The next clip is all about the rebuilding of Leavenworth, Pennsylvania after flooding. Nott too much excitement. Next we have brake tests. oooookay. Finally, in another pointless animal cruelty segment, as the 'smallest animal circus' features rats dangling from wires and ropes, and in the final segment, jumping down through a hoop of fire to a unsafe landing (no support!) below. Film 13: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 4, No. 2) (1939) B&W Runtime 8:20 Starts off with the new novel sport of surfing, as demonstrated by some rather tame wave surfing shots. We then go to Death Valley, and a story of living in Soma, one of the hottest places on earth. Luckily, a.. Chevrolet Automobile! comes every once in a while with supplies. After that, MORE BRAKE TESTS! using guns as a brake testing tool sure is interesting. Not to sure WHY guns have to be used. Next we see the thriving art of amateur photographers who seem to go through great lengths to get that great shot, even facing an incoming train!! We finally finish with the obligatory animal in a precarious spot feature, featuring a deer living with a family. No no, this deer was "Found in the forest and brought to the city to live" as if that justifies it. The deer goes with the wife of the family to go shopping, where of course, it's left in the car, windows up, while the wife does so. This edition seems to have a new narrator. Film 14: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 4, No. 3) (1939) B&W Runtime 9:29 A parade about yes, road safety. This being 1938, it always amazes me to see people celebrating the most mundane things, Next spot features another man switching his horseless carriage for a vehicle. This is similar to the story of a man switching his old car for a new one in an earlier Leader news. It seems to me that in the latter years of the Leader News films, that they tried to "smarten" them up a bit, as we are having stories dealing with natural problems, in this case looking for oil. But again, it turns out to be not much of a story at all. We then turn to a doctor who has a practice on stilts. This is explained as he can easily talk to people on 2nd stories of houses. Is climbing stairs THAT HARD? Next, in the obligatory ridiculous animal piece. a cow is featured smoking a pipe, wearing glasses, giving milk and dancing. Yes, that sure was useful information... FINALLY, we feature an archery demonstration with, again a marksman shooting arrows directly at pretty girls. What is it with these films? Film 15: Chevrolet Leader News (Vol. 5, No. 2) (1939) B&W Runtime 8:33 Once again, an expert is brought out to teach young nubile women how to fence. One woman is thrown into the water. The cultivation of rice is shown in the next clip. Nothing to write home about, the uses for rice (glue!) is quite extensive though. After that, a feature about model sailboat racing is shown, with everything from construction to racing being shown.. pretty interesting! Next, we see another obsession these films seem to have, and that's traffic conditions. This time, a weather balloon is tied to a camera to show localized traffic. Finally, in the "Animals placed in stupid places' we see cartons and cartons of baby chicks being shipped off south. Do they still do this? Seems a bit harsh, stuffing them into cardboard boxes, and then into planes.. Oops, I forgot, "American Chicks equal South American Checks!" We finally end off the film and the series, with 2 chicks in a mini plane. Why? Who knows. I claim ownership and rights to this media. All the films on this DVD have been researched and are copyright free or the copyeights have expired due to non renewal.
