Description: New York World’s Fair 1939/1940: Ephemera, GE, GM Brochures w/Jennings 1940 Map. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS First Class. It was one of the most impressive world’s fairs of all time. The US was coming out of a Great Depression and Americans needed a great show and the New York world’s fair of 1939/1940 did not let them down. Americans could truly take a glimpse into the “world of tomorrow” in the two buildings highlighted in these two rare pieces of ephemera. You are getting two pieces in this one buy-it-now lot. Thisis what you are getting. “The General Electric Building” This building truly introduced the world of tomorrow to fair goers. This piece caught my eye because of the TV element. This was the first world’s fair that highlighted television. At the GE building, fair goers could see – and appear – on television for the first time. What an incredible attraction this must have been. At the TV studio, fair goers could act in front of the TV cameras and – across the hall – television sets showed the program. It was “Live TV” as few Americans had ever seen. This four-fold brochure showed other innovations from the GE Building. The “House of Magic” theatre showedndemonstrations of many supposedly “magical” GE products, including a voice-operated toy train and “black” light, to thousands of people every day. The “Magic Kitchen” showed an all-electric kitchen,” (Refrigerator, "electric sink," electric range, ironer, lamps and lights -- and more for “Mrs. Cinderella”). For those with other interests, GE provide the Rockwell Kent Mural and an X-Ray of the skeleton of the Egyptian mummy Harwa. Unfolded the color brochure measures about 16-3/4 x 17-1/4. This is a rare brochure since it was printed and distributed in the last few months of the New York World’s Fair (May 1940 – the fair closed in October of that year). “Highways and Horizons” GM Building at the World’s Fair. This color brochure (unfolded about 10 x 14) features many of GM’s new products, some featured in the “Automobile Salon.” GM’s “Free Stage” “Previews of Progress” featured such mind-blowing innovations as a “cordless” radio microphone, cloth made of glass, and the “Talking Flashlight.” The brochure also contains a map by Rex (Rexford Upham) Jennings of the New York 1940 World’s Fair. This was right before Jenning’s went on to career at Disney where he worked on such classic movies as Dumbo (specializing on the lady elephants), Fantasia and Bambi. This is a color brochure. The original owner, a tourist from Akron,Ohio, folded this in half. No rips or tears, just packed away in a box for 81 years. This ephemera lot is ideal for those who are world’s fair collectors. AND it will be helping the hungry at this time since a portion of the proceeds of this sale goes to Feeding America, which runs food banks around the country.
