Description: For sale is and original pastel drawing of a black Labrador retriever by the world renown canine Artist and Etcher Morgan Dennis (1892 – October 22, 1960) Provenance: From a private estate of a highly regarded dog trainer on Long Island, New York. This portrait features a beautiful black lab perched and gazing out onto a lake seemingly ready to retrieve a duck on his masters command. But he also seems calm and pensive as if taking in the beauty of the landscape like a human would. Perhaps he is just resting after a long day out in the field with his master. He is silhouetted against a golden sky and looks quite divine. A very well executed work with detailed precision of the dogs body anatomy in the seated position. The character of the dog really shows through. It’s titled “DON” in the lower left. Possibly and probably, a commission portrait for the dogs owner at the time. The picture is signed and dated in the lower right. Some light smudging of the sharpness of the signature over time but the lettering is clearly readable. The date however is somewhat obscure and we believe it might possibly read 33. For 1933. But we are uncertain. Certainly of that age range. Condition: The pastel with overall age appropriate toning. Two paper edge tears depicted upper left and top right (see picture) Otherwise good Gallery framed under glass. Measurements Framed - 17 1/2” x 14” Sight Size - 15 1/2” x 12” Not Examined Out Of The Frame Morgan Dennis (1892 – October 22, 1960) was an American illustrator and author known primarily for his paintings of dogs. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Long Island, New York. He studied art with William Harry Warren Bicknell. He was commissioned by the Black and White Scotch Whiskey Company to illustrate the "Black and White Scotties", a successful ad campaign used over many years. One of his murals, "The Dog House", is in the bar and lounge of the Sheraton Russell Hotel in New York. He also competed in art competitions at the 1936 Summer Olympics, but did not win a medal.[1]
