NEW HAND CARVED WOODEN NUN SAINT SISTER LÚCIA DE JESUS DOS SANTOS STATUE FIGURE Polychrome finish, painted and 24 carat gold plated by hand. Reflecting personally on the saint: Sister Lúcia dos Santos, also known as Lúcia de Jesus Rosa Santos, was one of the three Portuguese children who reported witnessing apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Fátima, Portugal, in 1917. Unlike Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto, the other two children who were her cousins and who died young, Lúcia lived a long life dedicated to the religious vocation. Born on March 28, 1907, in Aljustrel, a small village near Fátima, Lúcia was ten years old when she and her cousins reported seeing the first of several apparitions of the Virgin Mary on May 13, 1917. The apparitions continued once a month until October 13, 1917, culminating in the "Miracle of the Sun," witnessed by a large crowd, which has since marked Fátima as a major pilgrimage site for Catholics. After the apparitions, Lúcia continued to receive visions and messages from the Virgin Mary. In 1928, she became a nun, joining the Sisters of St. Dorothy and later transferring to the Carmelite order in Coimbra, where she took the name Sister Maria Lúcia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart. As a Carmelite nun, she lived a life of prayer and penance, largely secluded from the public. Sister Lúcia wrote several memoirs and documents detailing the Fátima events and the messages associated with them, which included calls for prayer, repentance, and conversion, as well as the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She lived until the age of 97, passing away on February 13, 2005. Although Lúcia has not been canonized, the process for her beatification was opened in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI, and she is considered a servant of God, which is the first step towards sainthood in the Catholic Church.
