Description: A typical example of watercolor work by the noted New Orleans artist NESTOR FRUGE (1916-2011), 13 1/2" by 10 1/2" (18 1/2" by 14 3/4" framed), featuring a a New Orleans street scene with all the elements you expect to see in that city's French Quarter, including ornate cast iron balconies, street lanterns, the famous cathedral, and horse drawn carriages. Interestingly, in this particular composition, I believe the artist has taken some artistic license, including the cathedral in a way that is possibly not accurate from a sheer geography standpoint. Fruge painted mostly watercolors and was a familiar and beloved part of the Jackson Square tourist scene in New Orleans for decades. He painted mainly French Quarter scenes but also on occasion works such as bayou swamp landscape. Fruge's art traveled home with innumerable tourists, accounting for their geographical dispersion. He is said to have been still painting while in his 90's. Online information suggests a death date of 2011 or 2012; some show a birth date of 1914. The artist's impressionist style is distinctive and recognizable at a distance. This piece is in excellent condition. A label on the backing is in the artist's hand. See another example in my shop. Allow for reflections in several images.
