Comprises: (1) Script Signed: "Ronald Reagan/(Peter Roman)" by his mother, Nelle Clyde Wilson Reagan, 111p, 8¾x11¼. Final script for part I and II: Million Dollar Baby. Lightly frayed at edges. Metal brads holding it together. Pencil corrections on front. Otherwise, fine condition. (2) Autograph letter signed: "Ronald Reagan" by his mother, Nelle Clyde Wilson Reagan, ¼p, 7¼x10½. No place, no date. At bottom of typed letter from Gettysburg National Museum, Geo. D. Rosensteel, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Typed letter in full: "The Gettysburg National Museum located on the Gettysburg Battlefield, near the spot where Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address is starting a collection of personal items of people prominent in the news of every day America. It would be greatly appreciated if we could have a personal item from you for the collection; anything that you would deem suitable for display on this great American battlefield. Thanking you in advance for any favors you care to extend, I am, Sincerely yours, P.S. A suggestion - Anything you have used or worn." Answer in full: "Dear Sir- Thought you might be enterested (sic) in having one of the 'Scripts' I used; this one was changed to the name of 'Million Dollar Baby.' (4) Unsigned mailing envelope. Addressed in full: "Geo. D. Rosentell, (Curator)/Gettysburg National Museum/Gettysburg,/Pa.", 15½x12. Lightly worn at edges. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. On April 14, 1942, Ronald Reagan was inducted into the U.S. Army. Because of his commission in the cavalry reserve, he was made a Second Lieutenant. His years in the Army were interrupted a number of times to permit him to appear in Hollywood's contributions to the war, such as Warners' This Is the Army (1942) and USO promotional films Rear Gunner (1943) and For God and Country (1944). Captain Reagan received his Army discharge on December 9, 1945. While Reagan was in the Army, Warner Bros. hired his mother to answer his fan mail. When he returned to Warners, they deducted what they paid her from his salary. Mrs. Reagan also answered fan mail addressed to her daughter-in-law, actress Jane Wyman. There were piles of fan letters to Jane to answer but she ran out of "Jane's Journal" (her fan club newsletter) and photographs, so she thought it would be a good idea to disband her fan club. After becoming an actor, Ronald Reagan moved his parents from Illinois to California. His father died in 1941 and answering fan mail at home gave his mother something to do. Four items.
