Bridgeport Connecticut 1849 Check #250 Philo Hurd Signed Philo Hurd associated himself with Alfred Bishop of Bridgeport, Conn., to engage in railroading, and became a railroad promoter. He purchased the “right of way” for the old Housatonic Railroad, and for the entire line of the Naugatuck Railroad, the construction of which he superintended. He also had charge of the Madison & Indianapolis Railroad. Still later Mr. Hurd was appointed vice-president of the Hudson River Railroad, and was offered the presidency of the New York & Harlem Railroad, which road he had greatly built up. Mr. Hurd was an extensive traveler. He died in 1885 in Bridgeport.The Naugatuck Railroad has a long history in Connecticut, with the original railroad chartered in 1845 and opening in 1849. The railroad ran from Bridgeport to Winsted, following the Naugatuck River. It changed ownership several times due to economic changes, and in 1887 the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad leased the line. By 1906, the railroad was fully owned by the New Haven and Hartford Railroad.Showing barely any signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. No expected fold creases from posting. Has a clean barely noticeable "+" shape cut cancel near center. No major issues to note. Neat & legible writing. Eye-catching typeface / font. Will display well in your collection.
