Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM.—We first enter the Great Hall, 170ft. long, 97ft. wide, 72ft. high, with a monstrous skeleton of the cachalot, or sperm-whale, 50ft. long, in the centre. Branching out of the Central Hall, near its southern extremity, are two long galleries, 278ft. long by about 50ft. wide. These galleries are repeated on the first floor, and in a modified form on the second floor also; the white marble statue of Charles Darwin, by Boehm, is placed on the top of the first flight of stairs, facing the Entrance Hall of the Museum. The whole collection is divided into the Mineralogical, Botanical, Zoological, and Geological departments. The first of these is located in the gallery on the first floor of the east wing; the second occupies the upper floor of the east wing; the third takes the west wing; while Geology finds a place on the ground floor of the east wing. Besides these there is a fifth, or introductory, collection, in the Central Hall, which is intended as an introduction to all the others. The west side of the gallery round this hail contains a very interesting collection of birds, with their nests, eggs, and young, as in Nature; while the east wing is occupied by the Gould collection of humming-birds, which is described in a special catalogue. Another room on the ground floor, behind the great staircase, contains the British Zoological collection. One then passes to the Geological and Palaeontological collection, which occupies a basement of the east wing, to the right. The various galleries extending to the north of the Reptile Gallery are each about 140ft. long, and contain the fossil fishes and invertebrate animals. On entering the main portal the visitor passes under the "Monkey Arch," so named from the climbing monkeys that form its principal decoration.
