Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM.—This magnificent pile lies to the south of the Exhibition Galleries of the South Kensington Museum; it faces Cromwell Road, and extends from Exhibition Road to Queen's Gate. The Natural History Museum was built for the reception of the national collection from the British Museum, and was opened in i881. Thus this is a branch of the British Museum, containing as it does the Natural History collection—probably the finest in the world. In this view we get a capital idea of the noble proportions of this palatial structure, which was designed by Mr. Alfred Waterhouse, R.A. (1873-80). It is composed principally of terra-cotta, and cost about £400,000. The style is the earlier Romanesque, which prevailed largely in Lombardy and the Rhineland in the iith and 12th centuries. This museum is set back iooft, from the Cromwell Road. The extreme length of the front is 675ft., and the towers are each 192ft. high. When the great collection at the British Museum was divided, the idea was that the products or what are called natural forces should be removed to South Kensington. This museum comprises specimens of mammals, etc., brought together by Sir Hans Sloane; ornithology, by Colonel Montagu; Indian animals, by Hardwicke; mammals and birds, by Hodgson; fishes, by Yarrell; Antarctic specimens, by Ross and Belcher; entomology (88,000 specimens), by Stephens; vertebrate animals from China, by Reeves; shells (the largest collection ever formed, acquired in 1866), by Hugh Cuming; and many other priceless natural history treasures.
