Description: The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 provided for automatic entry on one route per year not protected by another airline. National Airlines filed for, and was awarded, nonstop rights between Los Angeles and Seattle in early 1979. Service consisted of a daily DC-10 flight, beginning on April 1, 1979. This cover was carried on the inaugural National Airlines flight from Seattle, Washington to Los Angeles, California (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as NA-D4S.The Seattle Postmaster autographed the cover.After offers from several other airlines, Pan American World Airways proposed to merge with National Airlines in August 1978. A formal agreement was reached by the two carriers one month later. Almost one year later the Civil Aeronautics Board gave tentative approval and, in October 1979, sent its order to President Carter. On December 22, 1979, the President approved the merger, and on January 7, 1980, Pan American became the owner of all remaining National Airlines stock. A complete operational merger of the two airlines did not occur until late in 1980.
