Description: HISTORY OF THE CAPTIVITY OF NAPOLEON AT ST. HELENA; FROM THE LETTERS AND JOURNALS OF THE LATE LIEUT.-GEN. SIR HUDSON LOWE, AND OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS NOT BEFORE MADE PUBLIC. WILLIAM FORSYTH VOLUME I-III JOHN MURRAY: LONDON 1853 First Edition, Sir Hudson Lowe GCMG KCB (28 July 1769 – 10 January 1844) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who is best known for his time as Governor of St Helena, where he was the "gaoler" of the Emperor Napoléon. Napoléon and Governor Lowe had a stormy relationship, and only met half a dozen times. To a large extent, Lowe's hands were tied by his instructions from The 3rd Earl Bathurst, but Lowe's characteristic lack of tact doubtless exacerbated the friction between them. Includes an excellent topographical map of Saint Helena. The rugged terrain of the island is depicted by hachure, and there is also good detail of towns, roads, rivers, and vegetation. Surrounding the island are hundreds of depth soundings, as well as safe anchorages and navigational hazards. The map was based on a survey by John Barnes with depth soundings by Captain F. W. Austin. Engraved by J. & C. Walker. 51 x 65 cm. 23 x 15 cm. xii + 495 pp + frontispiece + folding map. Good condition for the age. They are faded on the spine, corners of boards bumped, hinges cracking, a little occasional foxing. These were library books from Roseburg Public Library from the Samual D. Evans collection. Then the Douglas county museum research library. They have library rental stamps and cards. They are stamped on the page edge with the Douglas library stamp. There are also catalog numbers written on the spines. Map has a rip on the bottom left, but otherwise very nice. All 3 volumes! Inside the books I found the original receipts from when these were purchased by the Roseburg library in February of 1930. Those are included.
