Description: Offered is a rare two-color slipped polychrome jar by Nampeyo of Hano. Few were made at Hopi because of the skill and complexity required. A simplified description of how this two color slip was achieved involves: The white color required kaolin clay consisting of pottery shards fired in a reducing fire. The red color required hematite added to the slip which when fired uncovered, results in a red color. The jar is in very good condition considering its 114 years. There is light surface handling wear and rim wear as shown. The dimensions are 5.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches wide. This jar was purchased from John C. Hill Indian Art, Scottsdale, Arizona.
