ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Gorgeous & Ultra-Rare Antique Circa Early 1900s Chromolithograph Depicting a Stunning View of the Famous Italian Village Lake Resort titled, “Bellagio L. Como.” (‘L’ is abbreviated for: Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy), after the original c1870 watercolor painting by the famous listed painter & illustrator, ‘Myles Birket Foster, R.W.S.’ (English, 1825-1899), whose famous printed monogrammed initials, ‘FB’, appears lower-right in the image corner. Print Info: The publisher is unknown, but there is a tiny stamp on verso that states the printing location, ‘Made in England’. The Chromolitho is on a nice heavier-weight light cream-colored wove paper stock and what’s cool, is that there is a very light embossing to various details of image like the city architecture itself, parts of the wall, fishing boats and the women in the lower-right—the slight embossing is basically visible from the back of the piece, but not so much from the front just by looking at it, but you can slightly feel if you run your fingers across the various elements within the scene. The Chromolitho at one time a very long time ago was drymounted (lightly glued along edges and a few swipes back & forth in middle area on back) to another backing stock (no longer with the piece) with the light glue residue still noticeable though I believe it was never-framed, and when someone had removed it from its old backing, they pulled some of the back surface paper away with it about 5-1/2” x 7/8” long, a cigar-shaped area in the middle-far-right (village seawall/boat dock area), which thankfully doesn’t go all the way through the layers of paper to the front, but enough so that the paper is very thin in that spot, but is not noticeable from the front (unless held up to the light, or seen from behind) and the image still presents fine and I put a strip of archival tape behind it for strength & protection—hence the low starting price—and won’t be noticed once it is beautifully framed-up archivally & behind UV Conservation Glass. Size & Condition: The Chromolitho size is 13-13/16” x 25-5/16”. The Chromolitho is in BelowGrade-Good Rare+ condition with no color fade—rich earthy & pastel colors with fine detail & nice tones. This Chromolitho has been in a drawer amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and has not seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed. No tears. No real foxing noticeable at all aside from maybe a handful of tiny & faint specks here & there on the sheet which are barely noticeable and aren’t worth mentioning. Extremely minimal & light small creasing scattered here & there along the bottom edge and the bottom right corner. Negligible toning of the paper stock from age which isn’t even really noticeable amidst the light-cream color of the paper itself. Ultra-minimal edge wear with a few dents & dings here & there which are negligible since the edge would easily be covered by the inner rabbet edge of a frame or covered by a mat. This beautiful Chromolitho has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
