Mugwort or wormwood leaves are formed into sticks or cones about the size and shape of a cigar, and then burned to release energy. Moxibustion has been practiced for more than 3,000 years in China, and advocates claim and can strengthen and warm your blood and life energy, and treat inflammation and cancers. Medicinal Properties:Mugwort is a mild bile-promoting herb used as a tonic when there is difficulty digesting fatty or protein foods and as a general remedy for mild indigestion. It is also used following influenza to help promote the appetite and restore energy. Mugwort is useful for amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, and the fresh juice is applied externally for poison oak. Mugwort is commonly used in moxibustion to increase blood circulation and relieve pain. Cautions:Avoid during pregnancy; don't use the tincture for more than 10 days, up to several times a year; the tea is safe to use longer-term. Planting Instructions:Mugwort seeds germinate best with a cold treatment. Some herb gardeners will sow the herb seeds directly out in the garden in the late fall for germination the next spring. Others mix the herb seeds with dampened peat moss and place the Mugwort seeds/peat moss mixture in the refrigerator for 2 to 4 weeks before planting. The Mugwort herb plant can be invasive. It spreads by underground rhizomes and by re-seeding. Deadheading the flower clusters before they go to seed is helpful in controlling the spread.
