Description: Mrs Sigourney, The Sweet Singer of Hartford by Gordon S Haight, New Haven Yale University Press (1930). Purple cloth hardcover (5.5x8”), 201 pgs including Bibliography, Notes and Index, 8 b&w ils. … No ISBN SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. (This signature matches that in the letter. (see below) Also includes a copy of a letter sent 24 July, 1928, from the author (Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, CT) to the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, CT, requesting access to any documents pertaining to Mrs Sigourney. There is also a copy of an entry in George Combe’s Journal from 1939 that speaks of Mrs Sigourney. It's possible this was the author's personal copy, or otherwise someone very close to the author and the book. Going by the small editorial notations, additions, corrections scattered around the text of this copy, and the copy of the author's 1928 letter referring to the project of writing this book. ---from Wiki: Lydia Huntley Sigourney (September 1, 1791 – June 10, 1865), née Lydia Howard Huntley, was an American poet, author, and publisher during the early and mid 19th century. She was commonly known as the "Sweet Singer of Hartford." She had a long career as a literary expert, publishing 52 books, plus articles in over 300 periodicals during her lifetime. REF: wiki Condition notes: Binding tight and pages clean, but age toning has started. There are editing? notations, changes, corrections in red pen in the book and one in pencil in the Notes Section. Maybe by the author? I tried to scan them all, but I may have missed a few. Gilt lettering on the spine is still crisp, but the spine has faded a bit. There is some edge and corner wear to the covers, with the only real damage to this copy being a small vertical tear in the top end of the spine (see first picture). Please see the pictures for more information about this book and the condition of this copy. ► We are thinning contents of our smoke-free, pet-free home. Books will be listed, plus toys including CCG and trading cards, fabric/wallpaper sample books, jigsaw puzzles, jewelry, household items and maybe some of my fishing and workshop stuff.
