Mount Fujiyama, JAPAN - Dollar Steamship Lines Courtesy Postcard

Description: Mount Fujiyama, JAPAN - Dollar Steamship Lines Courtesy Postcard: Mount Fuji (富士), located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft.). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometers (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" (三霊山) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. It is also a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and one of Japan's Historic Sites. The postcard is a courtesy postcard issued by Dollar Steamship Lines. At its height in the 1920s, the Dollar Steamship Company was the largest and most successful United States shipping firm, and its signature white dollar sign mounted on red-banded stacks was known around the world. Dollar was founded by Robert Dollar (1844-1932), a poor Scottish immigrant to Canada. On May 16, 1932, Robert Dollar died at the age of 88 and was succeeded by his son, Robert Stanley Dollar. Following Robert senior's death, the company began a steady decline. In August 1938, the United States Maritime Commission judged the company unsound and assumed control over it, appointing William Gibbs McAdoo to succeed R. Stanley Dollar and Joseph R. Sheehan as the new president of the line. This Linen Era (1930-45) postcard is in good condition, but there is some soiling.
