David Courtney sat in the salon while the ship IT WAS a late January afternoon when the Ciudad de Ceuta from the Atlantic sent rain and spray whipping across the open s and pitched with monotonous regularity. Strong gusts decks, pelting the glass with a rattle. On the horizon the blue- black mountains of the Rif lay like a sleeping giant. Courtney bursed his Madrid hangover and watched the town, white specks in the distance, grow larger. Stretching out to the left was the European quarter with its wide boulevards and modern buildings and expensive hotels. Behind, like a tide rising into the hills, were the residences of the wealthier Europeans and Jews and Arabs. The Spanish waiter, his tray swinging at an angle against the motion of the ship, placed a small cognac glass before him. Courtney opened his mouth to protest and the waiter indicated a tall young Englishman standing at the tiny bar, who smiled and lifted his glass. They had suffered the night sitting up in the same train compartment from Madrid. Oh, well, hair of the dog- He grinned at the Englishman and drank up.
