Description: MONTBLANC W-Germany Meisterstück Diplomat 149 Khanjar Special Order Fountain Pen for high-ranking military officers of Oman Ministry of Defense. Retailed by Garrard & Co in London (UK)Clip engraved: W-Germany 14k – 585 Medium Nib w/ ebonite feed. Year: Mid 1970s. With gold plated clip and seal-band w/ Oman Defence Ministry crest. Condition report: the pen comes in good preowned condition. It has been previously inked. Minor handling micro scratches under magnification. Comes with a matching fitted Garrard box. No papers. Particularly during the 1970s, His Majesty Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the Sultan of Oman, commissioned Montblanc – most of the time through Garrard & Co and Asprey boutiques in Mayfair, London – to produce a highly limited number of pens (and watches, of course). These special order writing instruments ranged from the #146 to the #149 and even the ballpoint or pencil variants. Pens fitted with "Khanjar" were presented as gifts to the Monarch's closest dignitaries and officials. It was an honor, and sign of respect, to be presented with a pen depicting the Omani state symbol. Many of these pens are cherished by their original owners, hardly used, and passed down from one generation to the next. As a result, Montblanc pens with "Khanjar" emblem hardly appear on the market. This "Khanjar" #149 is a very elusive model. A feature that immediately attracts the eye is the “ Khanjar” symbol, the national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman (a dagger with a hooked blade over two crossed swords), found on the barrel band. It is engraved as follows: Wezarit Aldefaa Alomaneya i.e. « Ministry of Defense – Omani » Omani market pens were generally ordered through London distributors (Asprey and Garrard most of the time). Only a handful of 149 made for the Omani market have appeared on the market thus far, highlighting the utter rarity of the model. Two of them surfaced in the mid 1980s at Christies South Kensington (London). But they weren’t a new model then. They must have been a few years old at that time. Indeed, they did have the Omani Minister of Defence's personal markings on them indicating that he had ordered them and given them as diplomatic gifts. They must have been some special order that Montblanc put in to some UK jewelry manufacturer (like Asprey and Garrard) possibly before the Dunhill takeover in 1977.
