Description: Excellent old railroad paperweight in the shape of the historic DeWitt Clinton locomotive made for the New York Central Railroad by the Van Gytenbeek Mfg. Co, of New York. This commemorative paperweight is cast in a heavyweight metal with excellent craftsmanship and superb detail, with "DE WITT CLINTON" embossed on both sides of the tender. It depicts the 1831-era DeWitt Clinton locomotive and its passenger cars on top of a plinth embossed with reliefs of transportation modes from dog sleds to covered wagons to locomotives. The base reads "PIONEER TRAIN OF THE MOHAWK & HUDSON RAIL ROAD - 1831 - FIRST TRAIN IN NEW YORK STATE, OPERATED BY NEW YORK CENTRAL - ONE OF THE FIRST TRAINS OPERATED IN AMERICA". The underside reads "VAN GYTENBEEK MFG. CO.INC. - NEW YORK © 1930 - DESIGN PAT. APP." It measures 1.75" tall by 7" long by 2.25" wide, and weighs 1.25 lbs. Comes from a smoke free estate.
