Description: Mohawk Airlines finally inaugurated its long-deferred Philadelphia to Elmira / Corning service on September 15, 1966, replacing service formerly operated by United Air Lines.This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 94 flight from Elmira, New York to Washington, DC (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 94S68.On April 12, 1972, the Civil Aeronautics Board approved the merger of Mohawk Airlines with Allegheny Airlines, with Allegheny Airlines (later renamed USAir and US Airways) as the surviving company. The takeover was completed by June 1, 1972. US Airways was a major American airline that ceased to operate independently when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for US Airways and American Airlines on April 8, 2015.
