Description: Modern Depiction of Christ at the Scourge Column | Artwork by Alfred Seidel | Monotype & Drawing Modern Depiction of Christ at the Scourge Column | Artwork by Alfred Seidel | Monotype & Drawing Alfred Seidel (1913-2001) Alfred Herbert Georg Seidel was born on 1 November 1913 in Wroclaw. After the tragic loss of his father Otto in the First World War, he moved with his mother Maria and his sister Helene to their Upper Silesian homeland in Scharley or Deutsch-Piekar. Alfred Seidel spent his childhood there, near the coalfield near the then border with the Russian Empire. He received his education under the care of two aunts and the profession of his mother. The environment was marked by petty-bourgeois values and deep-rooted Catholicism. Seidel was enrolled at elementary school in Deutsch-Piekar in 1920 and moved to the Realgymnasium in Beuthen in 1924. There, an attentive drawing teacher recognized his talent and encouraged it. From an early age, Seidel was drawn to artistic creation. Shortly before graduating from high school, he left the Realgymnasium in 1933 and began training as a theatre painter on 2 November 1933. This was followed by engagements as a theatre painter at the Upper Silesian State Theatre in Beuthen and later as the first theatre painter and studio director at the Stadttheater in Salzburg. During World War II, Seidel was drafted and wounded twice. Despite the loss of his right eye, his calling as an artist proved unwavering. He created numerous graphics, drawings, paintings in various techniques as well as stained glass windows and sculptures. His lifelong interest in literature was reflected in his illustrations and writing works. After his release from American captivity in 1945, Seidel first found a new home in Silenbuch and from 1954 in Schorndorf. He was a member of the Künstlergilde Esslingen for many years. Alfred Seidel died on 20 November 2001 in Schorndorf, leaving behind his wife Elisabeth and their three children Susanne, Matthias and Christoph. In 2017, his heirs left most of his works to the city of Schorndorf. Alfred Seidel illustrated many fairy tales, especially at the beginning of his career, with the post-war years offering him an ideal field of work through reissues of classic fairy tales. Examples of his illustrations include works by Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, Agnes Sapper, and Tamara Ramsay. Later, he also devoted himself to illustrating novels, including works by Egon H. Rakette. In addition, he created graphics on literary topics independently and without concrete commissions, which he summarized in so-called "graphic cycles". These cover works by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Molière, William Shakespeare, and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, as well as graphics for magazines and calendars. Throughout his creative period, numerous works were created in various techniques such as oil paintings, linocuts and watercolors. His favorite subjects were religious or mythological motifs as well as portraits from his professional and personal environment. Landscapes were rather an exception. Beginning in 1957, Seidel increasingly designed public spaces, especially artistic interiors of Catholic churches. He created wall mosaics, altars, tabernacles, Stations of the Cross and numerous stained glass windows for the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Regardless of commissions, Alfred Seidel also wrote a number of dramas and narratives dealing with various themes such as “Christopher Columbus,” “Conradin the Last Hohenstaufen,” “Fanage of Religious,” “Inheritance Fraud,” and “Paths of Self-Knowledge.” His stories shed particular light on his childhood and youth in Upper Silesia as well as his family experiences and encounters. Alfred Georg Seidel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1981 for his artistic work.     Return: All items can be returned within 14 days with no quibble.
