It has been my aim to make the volume a practical guide and not in any sense just an armchair discussion. Many of the layout kinks shown are from my own experience or that of others, and the complete layout plans given and discussed are in most cases actual examples which have been built. Individualism in model railroading is most evident in design of layout, and the reader must realize that no person except himself can set down on paper his express desires. One man likes yards more than main line, another has a flair for junctions, another for bridges and trestles, and so it goes. Hence no book could even attempt to present you with a ready-drawn plan to fit your space, even should that space be identical with others. In this book I've attempted instead to help you design your own plan, basing it upon sound ideas and upon successful plans of others. My thanks to Linn Westcott for allowing use of many of his excellent designs, to Boomer Pete, whose practical construction methods make up much of the last chapter, to John Page for practical kinks on page 80, and to Frank Taylor, editor of THE MODEL RAILROADER, for the fine series of drawings on page 83-89.
