Description: Mnemosyne, New Orleans Original Artwork By Artist 3D Paper House Portrait. This artwork, titled “Mnemosyne, New Orleans” is of a fictional home inspired by the oaks and architecture found in the garden district of New Orleans, Louisiana. This is not a real location you can visit in the Big Easy, but it feels so familiar, no? Even her name is reflective of the Greek muses’ mother, who was a goddess of recollection and remembrance. I created this piece as part of my solo art exhibition in 2019, titled “Near & Dear.” It was one of over twenty pieces showcased in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The original artworks are “petite” three-dimensional paper relief sculptures, crafted with ink, x-acto knives, and mat board. The final result, once framed, gives the sense that this tiny paper house lives in its own little black-and-white world, waiting for you to peer into it with wonder. On my exhibition, Near & Dear: It is a celebration of the connection we have to places close to our hearts, and the way we choose to elevate those places in our memories. There is intimate communication between us and our surroundings. Our awareness of its details and intricacies is often passive—yet they form an indelible mark on our subconscious. We can relate to unfamiliar places because of these details that our settings may share. It is in the quaint or quirky characteristics that make houses become homes and front yards become places of memories-had and memories-yet-to-be-made. I chose locations both fictional and non-fictional to help me transmit this perception and familiarity. When I encounter certain artworks at museums, such as art by Henri Matisse or Andre Derain, it's like embracing old friends. I like to think that they greet me with a returned fondness. I create art because I want others to feel a similar relationship to my own experience. Transforming my illustrations into three-dimensional structures provides a reason to beckon a second glance—and maybe even a smile or sense of wonder—much like we can do with our own familiar places in passing.
