Schreiber and Laura Burkhardt Moeller 2004 Walsworth Publishing Second Edition/2,000 copies 394 page illustrated hardcover Signed & Dated Mark S. Schreiber – Author – Deputy Warden MSP/JCCC____________________________________ This extensively researched and lavishly illustrated book is the definitive 170 year history of the Missouri Department of Corrections' flagship institution, "The Missouri State Penitentiary," also known as "The Walls" and "The Big House." The penitentiary initially opened in 1835, the same week and year as the battle of the Alamo in Texas. During the 1830s, prisoners were employed in making bricks, many homes in Jefferson City at the time were constructed with their bricks in this manner as well. By the 1930s, "The Missouri State Penitentiary" was the largest penitentiary in the country. Unit #4 was Pretty Boy Floyd's home for many years and cell #33 was heavy weight champion, Sonny Liston's home for a while. James Earl Ray successfully escaped from the penitentiary hidden inside a huge bread box. The following year he was convicted for the assassination of Martin Luther King and returned, although into a different cell. The prison closed in 2004.
