From 1963 to 1993, the 44th Strategic Missile Wing out of Ellsworth Air Force base manned 150 missiles and 15 launch control centers in Western South Dakota. The 44th strategic missile wing was comprised of 3 squadrons, the 66th, 67th & 68th missile squadrons with each squadron having 5 launch control facilities and 50 missile silos apiece.
