Description: The history of the Mississippi River Valley is told through the adventures of Minn, a snapping turtle, as she travels hundreds of miles downstream. As with all Holling books, it is lushly illustrated, containing many full-page color paintings, text pages that are also illustrated with black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings, and with explanatory captions in the margins. First published in 1951, it received the Newbery Honor award the following year. Condition: While this decorative, price chipped dustjacket shows substantial wear – chips, tears, rubbing, especially to the front cover – it is also in existence which is not as common for the first edition being a popular children’s book. The jacket has protected the beautiful bright yellow cloth boards as they are in very good condition with only slight edgewear at the spine and tips of the corners. Corners are sharp with no bumping. Black stamped text to cover and spine with a turtle illustration of Minn. The spine is straight with hinges firmly attached to the decorative endpapers. Text block is solid with all pages firmly attached. There is age tanning throughout with slight darkening at the page edges. The interior pages are in excellent condition with no chips, tears, or previous owner markings. 87 pages. Dimensions: H – 11” W – 8-3/4”. Holling Clancy Holling (1900 - 1973) was born in Henrietta Township, Michigan and attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he met his future wife, artist Lucile Webster whom he married in 1925. With his wife Lucile he wrote and illustrated many popular books, and he also illustrated for other authors. More about Holling can be found at the Leland Museum in Leland, Michigan (he graduated from Leland High School in 1917). He died in Pasadena, California and is buried in Nims Cemetery in Henrietta Township.
