Description: Up for sale is a COMPLETE TWO PART SET that provides a comprehensive look at mining activities in the United States in the year 1923. Part I covers metals; Part I covers non-metals. It is uncommon to find both parts, in matching bindings, offered for sale at the same time. These books have much interesting material, both narrative and statistical. For example, certain products, now considered undesirable and toxic - such as arsenic and asbestos - were aggressively mined, produced and used in a wide variety of applications throughout the economy. The volumes for 1923 are particularly interesting because they are the last year prior to an organizational change that reflects the ambitions of a future United States president! (See explanation below.) The lot includes BOTH of the following: Book # 1 (of 2): [Shown as the book on the left in photos # 1-6 and as the only book in photos # 7-9.]Title: Mineral Resources of the United States 1923: Part I METALSAuthor: F. J. Katz (Geologist in Charge, Division of Mineral Resources) + multi-authored133 introductory "A" pages + 653 pages.See photo # 8 for the Table of Contents. AND Book # 2 (of 2): [Shown as the book on the right in photos # 1-6 and as the only book in photos # 10-12.]Title: Mineral Resources of the United States 1923: Part II NON-METALSAuthor: F. J. Katz (Geologist in Charge, Division of Mineral Resources) + multi-authored750 pages.See photo # 11 for the Table of Contents Each volume was published by the United States Department of the Interior*, U.S. Geological Survey and printed at the United States Government Printing Office in Washington DC. They bear the designation (at the top of the title page): 68th Congress, 2nd Session House Document No. 582. Note that although Part 1 was printed in 1927 and Part 2 was printed in 1926, they actually cover the year 1923. Presumably, it took some time to obtain and process all of the included data. *This is actually a very interesting point. The 1923 volumes were the last to be published by the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Service. Starting in 1924, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Mines took over the publication. The reason for the change probably relates to internal politics in the Harding and Coolidge administrations. The Secretary of Commerce was (future President) Herbert Hoover, who had been a working mining engineer before entering politics. (He had worked in Australia, China, and many other places overseas.) In 1921, incoming President Warren Harding offered Hoover his choice of cabinet positions: Secretary of the Interior or Secretary of Commerce. Hoover chose Commerce, which - at that time - was considered the less prestigious post. However, he rapidly expanded the scope of the Commerce Department. Per the Wikipedia:"Hoover demanded, and received, authority to coordinate economic activity throughout the government. ... In some instances he 'seized' control of responsibilities from other Cabinet departments when he deemed that they were not carrying out their responsibilities well; some began referring to him as the 'Secretary of Commerce and Under-Secretary of all other departments.'" Each volume measures about 9.25 inches tall by about 6 inches wide. Together, they will occupy a little under 3 inches on your book shelf.
