The development of the gardens was started by Henry Middleton in 1741. He used Dezallier d’Argenville’s The Theory and Practice of Gardening. Henry Middleton designed a 45-acre classical garden and 16-acre lawn. Over the years, Henry Middleton’s descendants added camellias, azaleas, crepe myrtles, magnolias, and exotic flora propagated in greenhouses on-site. This is a nice, vintage postcard.
