Description: Ex-Voto Mexican Retablo Folk Art Tin Sign Thanks to Virgin for My Son Marrying WidowThis retablo is a handmade painting – an original piece of Mexican folk art. The artist tells a story of thanks in words and picture. It is all hand painted directly onto the tin.The artist tells the following story: (loosely translated)“After many years of not doing anything, my son Gumersindo settled down his head with the widow Amalia Crus. She was very lonely with a lot of land and stock. Gume was 38 and she was 54. Virginecita [little Virgin], you listened to me. Now to celebrate I am going to ask for two sheep. s/ Sabina Tapia, Texmelucan 6/Nov/56.”The tin is painted in bright tones and is done in a primitive style. You can see the Virgencita painted in the clouds, looking down on the three of them. There are lots of animals on the land. The tin sign measures just about 12-1/4 inches across x 8-1/2 inches in height. This is an original piece of artwork, bought from the artist's representative in Mexico. The date of creation is not known as the artists who do this type of work sometimes use a historic date to show context for the scene created. Sometimes the artists and their families hold on to works for many years before making them available for sale so it is impossible to say when it was created. Sometimes they make available pieces as they are created. The piece of tin is not rigid. There may be light and camera shadows reflected on the back of the tin in the photograph. The artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some tears, holes, rust, scratches and paint splotches.
