The Empire and indeed the whole civilized world has been forced to realize once again that its very existence depends upon the merchant fleets and particularly on the British Merchant Navy. This is not the place to record events that have passed into history nor to attempt to forecast the future, but that the attacks on Allied shipping will intensify is to state a fact that should be obvious to all. An entirely new arrangement has been adopted for this issue, partly to meet the increasing needs for quick recognition and partly to increase its general interest. First, all line drawings have been grouped together in one section regardless of country and strictly according to a system of recognition, colouring having little or no value in wartime when most vessels are painted grey or otherwise changed in appearance. A very large number of additional funnel designs have been added as well as some hundreds of drawings of House. Flags of British and foreign companies. It is hoped that these will add to the general and historical value of the publication. Many hundred additional half-tones have been introduced into the letter-press. Finally, one comprehensive index has been made which will greatly facilitate quick reference. It has not been permitted to include a list of war losses and no new drawings of ships have been allowed. Notwithstanding this it is hoped that the, edition will meet with the approval of most. Below is an abbreviated list of the general arrangement of the drawings. A careful study of the pages will, it is hoped, *quickly show the general plan better than devoting many lines to a description. The general principle has been to take number of funnels first then number of masts, thereafter arranging ships which fall into the same category according to position of funnels and masts. "Island bridges" are separated from those close up against the funnel, ships with derrick posts (other than that serving a hatch between funnel and bridge) are kept distinct from those without and these again are arranged according to number and position of posts. As the principal object is recognition, ships are not necessarily kept strictly within their technical categories. For example, ships with raised forecastle and poop and with a midships structure: would, when silhouetted, be confused with "three island" vessels and so they are not divided. First and foremost the grouping is according to recognition. There must always be many misfits and it is often extremely difficult to decide into which category a ship falls, but it is believed that the system adopted will be found good, and indeed from the many letters received from serving Officers it would appear to be the one desired. Illustrations of any ships, flags or funnels, past or present, however small, will always be welcome, as also will be newspaper cuttings or notes of any kind. All pictures are of the actual item.
