Description: James Hooper’s important collection of the arts of North America, Africa, and the Pacific Islands was auctioned in a series of sales at Christie’s, London, in the late 1970s. Pieces from his collection are still avidly sought. This scarce catalog documents one of the landmark sales of Oceanic art, held June 19, 1979. It is 9.5 x 7.25 inches with 67 pages of text, plus 6 pages of color plates with 8 objects, and 50 pages with 78 black-and-white plates (many with multiple items). The total number of pages is 124. The vast majority of the 198 lots were of single items. Highlights of the sale commanding the highest prices (up to 110,000 British pounds) included one of the world’s greatest examples of a Torres Straits tortoiseshell mask, a superb Fijian pectoral, and several Polynesian masterpieces: sculptural figures on or from Raratonga fans, a Mitiaro wood staff god, the top of a Raratonga staff god, an Easter Island wood paddle, and an Easter Island wood female figure. Most of these important pieces are illustrated in color. This is a very good copy with only faint wear to the cover. There is almost no evidence of handling, and the corners are crisp. A small owner’s name is on the title page. A photocopy of the list of prices realized is inserted. I do not accept returns. I provide thorough descriptions and good photos.
