Description: Estate FindMegyesi Schwartz Antal,Hungary (1897 - 1978)Oil PaintingPortraitBritish School BoyLondon1936 We offer a charming portrait of a British school boy properly attired in suit with his school tie. Painted by Megyesi Schwartz Antal, the Hungarian artist traveled extensively across Europe, the British Isles and South America capturing the visages of society, politics and military. The painting is signed at the lower right corner with "Megyesi S.A. London 1936 XI.".The original gilt wood and plaster frame retains on the reverse the maker's label from C. Soar & Son, London carvers and gilders in business from 1883-1997 whose work can be found surrounding art in the British Museum. The frame measures 20 1/4" in width and 24 3/8" in height with a projection of 2 1/2". The stretched linen canvas measures 16" in width and 19 1/2" in height. The image measures 15 1/4" in width and 19 1/4" in height. As seen in the photographs, to the right of the child's ear is a loss of paint flakes less than the area of a dime. There is no crazing, loose paint or flaking of paint on the whole of the canvas. There is a flake or chip to the plaster at the lower left corner of the frame. The British school boy portrait by the Hungarian artist Megyesi Schwartz Antal is presented in very good vintage condition. Megyesi Schwartz Antal (1897-1978)Born in Hungary, Megyesi Schwartz Antal studied art and worked as a graphic designer in Budapest after the First World War. He later concentrated on portraiture and travelled throughout Europe. He emigrated to South America and continued painting throughout Latin America. He is buried in Bolivia. Charles David Soar (1853-1939) Working as "carvers and gilders, and artists’ colourmen", the company Charles David Soar was in business from 1883-1906 and operated as C.D. Soar & Son from 1907-1997. The business was located at 1 Sussex Villas, Kensington, London W 1883-1905, renamed 1905, 1 Launceston Place W8 1905-1918, 3 and/or 4 Launceston Place 1920-1997. Born in 1853, by the end of the 1860s, Charles had been apprenticed to a "gilder", one who coats items with gold leaf. His master was probably Robert Varley (1839-1903), with whom he later formed a partnership. Varley's entry in the 1871 England census described his occupation as "gilder decorator", while Soar was listed as a "gilder's apprentice".In 1882 Charles David Soar was in partnership with Robert Varley as Varley and Soar, carvers and gilders, 22 Great Ormond St, London WC, and in the 1881 census he was described as a junior partner. He then set up independently, and had an account with the suppliers, Roberson from his Kensington address, 1883-1908. In the 1901 census he was listed at 37 Dryburgh Road, Putney as a carver and gilder, age 48, with wife Mary, son John, age 21, and daughter Grace, age 20, both of whom appear to have been working in the business. In 1911, still at this address, his daughter, Grace, was recorded as a wood carver. Grace is said by her father to have ‘turned out some good work until she turned it up on marriage’ (information from Peter Soar, April 2005, taken from a family history, written by Charles Soar shortly before his death). He died in 1939.
