Description: Mechanicville is a city in Saratoga County, New York with a population of 5,196 as of the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern border of Saratoga County and is north of Albany, the state capital. The first listing of settlement on Shenendehowa Creek is in 1721. At that time Cornelius Van Buren had a sawmill at the mouth of the creek where it emptied into the Hudson River. The first documented occurrence of the name “Mechanicville” dates back to 1829. The name comes from the early settlers, who were independent “master craftsmen” such as millers, carpenters, or butchers, whose professions were commonly known as the “mechanical arts” at the time. When the Champlain Canal reached the settlement in 1823, and especially when the “Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad” laid track through the area in 1835, Mechanicville became an important commerce interchange, and the community became an incorporated village in 1859. It grew rapidly as textile mills, factories, and a linen thread company came to town. In 1878, additional railways came to the village, and it became an important center of papermaking. By 1900, Mechanicville was a major transfer yard and car repair center for the railways. In the 1920s, it had a population of nearly 10,100. John C. Duncan was one of them, born in Greenville Connecticut in 1859 and died in Mechanicville in 1942. That is all I could find out about “John Duncan”. I did find “South Main Street”, in Mechanicville and it looks like it is a main street that runs parallel to and between “Main Central” and the Hudson River. The card was published “C.W. Hughes, Mechanicville” and printed by “Paul Koebler”. It is a UDB, pre-1907, and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image of “South Main St. and Residence of John C. Duncan”. The reverse is also clean. The card had been kept in an album and has some corner shadows. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
