Description: This is a beautiful and rare piece of Amazigh silver jewelry of the Berber people. It should probably be in a museum. This is a massive chest piece, or pectoral, attached to two fibula and adorned with several coins, glass and enamel work. It is approximately 19" long and 19" wide. There appears to possibly be one coin missing. The chain links on the right side appear tangled. I found no markings but this is a large piece. Testing with a XRF Spectrometer found the piece to be more than 93% pure silver. It weighs a whopping 830 grams. This is believed to be from the region of Tiznit, Anti-Atlas Morocco. This was traditionally worn for celebrations, not everyday wear. Essential feminine embellishment, the tizerzai are taken in pairs to close the coat. Wonderful complete piece. The central talisman (HERZ) often has a sheet of paper, closed and sealed, on which is written in Arabic, one or more verses of the Quran selected by an Imam or a Marabout, at the request of a person who wants to be protected from the evil eye, curses, hatred, diseases or also to receive favors or luck.
