GIANT! HEAVY! (5 pounds 7 oz.!), hand forged original nickel-plated BIG IRON Vaquero spurs, with 1 3/4" SUPER WIDE heel bands x 5/8" THICK heel bands, circa 1870's, with fine, old, period big wide period leather straps. 19th Century spurs with nice old original period leathers in original condition are extremely rare. This very early spur style has several characteristics that are only found on early spurs. These 150-year-old spurs were made for Vaquero horseman and are completely hand made by craftsmen using only basic hand tools such as hammers, files, chisels, and grind stones. These full-sized man's spurs are BIG, about 6 3/4" overall; with about a 3" heel band opening at the open end. Both the inside and outside heel bands are 1 3/4" wide (tall) and 5/8" THICK! It is hard to imagine how a forger could hand forge this SUPER WIDE & THICK heel band, and this quickly became a lost art form in spur craftsmanship, and was obsolete by around the 1880's. The outside & inside heel bands are curved and plain Iron. I have been told that these very early BIG, HEAVY spurs were made specifically for long trail rides, as they would weigh down the legs and make it more comfortable on long horseback journeys. The shanks are Large; about 2 3/8 long x 7/8" wide across the top, with a traditional "triple eight" shape, with the two holes nearest to the shank being hand drilled through on both sides. Being hand forged, the rowels vary slightly and are about 3 3/16" (+/- 1/16") in diameter, taper slightly from the inside to the outside, with (8) tines on each spur rowel. The rowels have a nice chiming sound when spun; a characteristic that advanced spur makers who knew how and used their talents to create this unique sound. Some Vaqueros were known to have a certain sound in their spurs when walking along a boardwalk and could be identified just by the jingle / jangle of their spurs. The original rowel pins are Iron, with a peg on the outside; one with line engraving. The BIG, HEAVY Early style outside domed buttons are one solid piece of Iron, made to resemble a flower with petals and vary in size, i.e., 1 5/8" - 1 7/8". These early working spurs show typical variations as they are completely handmade and hand forged. The variations in the rowel pin decoration and button size were of no consequence to the spur maker making a BIG IRON spur. They were simply making a utilitarian object that would be used long and hard; design and attention to detail was unimportant and adds to their Folk Art charm. The smaller 3/4" diameter inside domed button are plain. Complete with correct, early, matching, unlined leather spur straps decorated with light tooling and Early Style nickel-plated wire buckles, en suite with the spurs. 19th century leather spur straps that fit the giant buttons of early spurs are rarer than the spurs. All with a fine, naturally occurring frosting to the ORIGINAL nickel plating with an untouched patina overall that collectors love to see. Nickel plating became popular on the Colt Single Action Army revolver in the early 1870's, and the Vaqueros on both sides of the border liked flashy, shiny accouterments, guns, spurs, et al. However, nickel plating is rare on this early style spur; almost all are plain Iron. These fine spurs show very little wear from actual wear on the Western Frontier, and have a nice, aged patina overall; especially for this early style spur that was passed down from generation to generation and typically saw decades and decades of hard use; especially considering they are around 150 years old. These Investment grade early spurs are very rare; especially in this fine condition; and come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way. This is about as good as it gets for a BIG, EARLY, IRON spur. These spurs would fit into any Spur, Espuela, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charita, Mexican, Mexican Revolution, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, or Western Americana display.
