JOHNSON & KOCH DIED.... MCWHORTER SURVIVED written...it is an AZO card. I found information online: MASON CITY IOWA AUG. 12 1921 The CO-MO photo company was located in Mason City. Ray Koch, killed in an air crash at Mason City when he attempted to climb from one plane to another at a height.of 600 feet by means a cable ladder. William W. Johnson. Ray McWhorters and Koch were rehearsing the exchange act at an altitude of 600 feet Thursday evening, Johnson was piloting the upper plane. Koch stood on the wings of the lower, and when Johnson swooped 'down, attempted to grab the ladder which swung suspended. He tried to get the planes near enough to each other to make the exchange and failed. Johnson edged his plane closer. The cable caught a projection of the lower plane, sending it into a tail spin and caused both men to crash to earth. Johnson and Koch were killed instantly In the crash. McWhorters was not to be seriously injured but has showed signs of improvement and yesterday physicians held out hope of recovery.
