Description: [ARTS XXth USA - PAINTING - EDWARD HOPPER]Edward Hopper1882-1967painter, engraverEdward Hopper, born July 22, 1882 in Nyack, New York and died May 15, 1967 in Greenwich Village (New York), is an American painter and printmaker.Practicing his art mainly in New York, where he had his workshop, he is considered one of the representatives of American realism, because he painted the daily life of the middle classes. At the start of his career, he depicted Parisian scenes before devoting himself to American landscapes and becoming an attentive witness to social changes in the United States. He produced many oils on canvas, but also worked on posters, engravings (etchings) and watercolors.Much of Hopper's work expresses by contrast the nostalgia for a bygone America, as well as the conflict between nature and the modern world. In a “metaphysical atmosphere”, in a world that has become another where human relationships are erased, his characters are most often lonely and melancholic.BiographyTraining and travel in EuropeEdward Hopper was born in Nyack, a town in New York State, into a modest family of merchants who sold dry goods. He received a Baptist education and attended a private school, then the high school of his hometown. He then moved to New York, where he trained as an illustrator at the New York School of Illustrating. He entered the New York School of Art in 1900. There he met George Wesley Bellows, Guy Pène du Bois, Patrick Henry Bruce, Walter Pach, Rockwell Kent and Norman Raeben, some of whom were assimilated to the Ash Can School. Among his teachers, Robert Henri (1865-1929) teaches him to represent realistic scenes of urban life.In order to complete his training, Edward Hopper made three stays in Paris, between 1906 and 1910, settling in particular at 48, rue de Lille. One of his paintings, entitled Escalier au 48, rue de Lille, bears witness to this.He visited several European countries: the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Haarlem), the United Kingdom (London), Spain (Madrid, Toledo), Germany (Berlin), Slovakia (Bratislava) and Belgium (Brussels). He became familiar with the works of the great masters of the Old Continent and produced around thirty works, mainly in Paris. It was also in this city that he met other young American artists and became interested in photography with Eugène Atget. He fell under the spell of French culture and remained a Francophile throughout his life: returning to the United States, he continued to read works in French and to write in this language. He was capable of reciting Verlaine...COLLECTIVE Beautiful work accompanying the exhibition at the Cantini Museum in Marseillefrom June 23 to September 24, 1989richly illustrated with numerous reproductions in black and in color - “Edward HOPPER” Paris, Editions Adam Biro / F.Loisirs, Cantini Museum, 1989 Text in FrenchFirst French PrintingLarge In-8, (approximately 30x22cm), 126pp.Publisher's hardback binding, full gray-blue cloth, brown titling on the spine, under beautiful colored illustrated dust jacket.(Good general condition, clean and fresh, minimal usual marks or rubbing very minor on edges or covers of the dust jacket) Numerous works reproduced in black and white and in color, various documents, engravings and drawings reproduced...
