Description: BRITISH 20th CENTURY RIVER LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING MARGARET MAITLAND HOWARD (1898-1983) RIVER LANDSCAPE This lovely British 20th century river landscape oil painting is by noted female artist Margaret Maitland Howard. The location may be Bath but needs more research. The composition is a tranquil river landscape with a man fishing from a boat in the foreground, a bridge and buildings beyond. A neo classical building stands on the right bank. A wonderful range of soft green tones and light make this a charming image by a well respected artist. Provenance. Inscribed with artist's name and bears remnants of old labels verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, 34 inches by 26 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a beautiful complementary frame 42 inches by 34 inches and in good condition. BIOGRAPHY Margaret Maitland Howard (1898 – 1983) was a painter, illustrator and draughtswoman. Born in London, she studied at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art and Royal Academy Schools, where she was a multiple silver medal-winner. She exhibited at the RA, NEAC and SWA, amongst others. Though a 20th Century artist her best work has a romantic neo-classical style reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites and late Victorian classicists.
