Description: Jacob Abbott (1803-1879) was a congregationalist minister who wrote more than 200 books, many in series which espoused Christian value and other moral messages. His Marco Paul series numbered five books; this is the first in the series, first published in 1843. Harpers was the fifth publisher to print this title but was the first to credit the author by name. Despite being fiction, the details about life in New York in the mid 19th century are fascinating. The illustrations are by Carl Emil Doepler (1824-1906), a German painter, illustrator and costume designer (for the Wagner Ring Cycle in 1876 in Bayreuth, Germany. He was the first to put horns on a Viking helmet, which historically was inaccurate. The printing of the wood engravings was done by the firm of Lossing-Barritt of New York. This is an extremely scarce volume of the "New York" travels. Roughly 5x7"; 196 pages; 14 engravings.
