Description: Marcantonio RAIMONDI (1480-1534) copper engraving, 1504-1505, after Albrecht Dûrer’s Life of the Virgin woodcut, “Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple.” Image area is about 11.5” tall by 8.25” wide. Losses at the top, and now-yellowed glue used tack the edges of the original 500-year-old engraving onto a heavier protective sheet: 12 x 8.9 inches. Fascinating Italian Renaissance work showing how Raimondi adjusted his engraving to simulate the woodcut character of Dürer’s original. Strong contrast between the black ink and the light cream paper, with many engrossing details. An impression on thin handmade linen paper, very much like the sheets Dürer used at the time. Edges notwithstanding, the paper is quite beautiful and in good condition. I include a photo cropped to show how this would look if you didn’t restore it but instead matted it to conceal the glue. Shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer. Please check out my other listings. Thank you for looking, and enjoy your day!
