Description: 5x7 Photo. Aerial view of K-25 gaseous diffusion plant. (The plant measured half a mile by 1,000 feet wide.) The K-25 plant, located in Oak Ridge, used gaseous diffusion to separate uranium-235 from uranium-238. This process exploited the lighter isotope's ability to pass through a porous barrier more easily. Despite producing only small amounts of product, it required a massive facility and consumed huge amounts of electricity. Built between June 1943 and early 1945 at a cost of $500 million, K-25 employed 12,000 workers. Its U-shaped building, larger than the Pentagon, housed hundreds of cascades. Construction began before the process design was complete. Oak Ridge's population grew from 13,000 to 50,000 by summer 1944 due to construction demands.5x7 inch reprinted photograph.
