Addressed to "Robert Ryland, Jr., Richmond College, Richmond, Va." Robert Ryland (March 14, 1805 – April 23, 1899) was the first president of Richmond College (now the University of Richmond), serving from 1841 to 1866. Prior to the establishment of the college, he had served as the only superintendent of its predecessor institution, the Virginia Baptist Seminary, since 1832. The letter is in exceptional condition. The letter is gold-edge stationery with a colorless bust of the woman in the upper left. The content of the letter includes "...rather surprised to receive a letter from you so soon after your arrival in Richmond..." and "...he has receive a letter from Mobile, offering him a school with a salary of $1,000 also one in Culpepper, but he prefers the one nearest Home..." and "Mr. Judkins has been quite sick he has a very bad cold. Ma says I must tell you I have strictly followed your advice, that I am trying hard to captivate him. Don't you believe a word of it, I have not forgotten our engagement. Mr. J. expects to commence a protracted meeting at Langley, next Sunday. I fear he will be too much indisposed to conduct it..." The letter is very readable and has many names of relatives and friends of the writer, which she is updating to her cousin. The letter is signed "Affe your Cousin, Mary."
