Alexander Pock was considered an important naturalist and, together with Ludwig Koch, was one of the leading experts in the field of military painting. His works are featured in virtually every publication on the Imperial and Royal Army. Pock was known for his naturalistic style, which was characterized by a detailed and value-neutral representation. His paintings depicted reality as it presented itself to him, without bold compositions or impressionist influences. This precise realism has often been perceived by critics as pedantic. His paintings were almost always created through a series of preparatory works, including drawings and oil sketches. Pock's brushstroke was calm and academic, rarely energetic, and his color palette was rich and vibrant, which was particularly fitting for the depiction of the colorful uniforms of the old Austrian army.
