His family as of French origin having lived in Savoy near Montblanc, where there flows a little river known as "La Thuille". He received his musical education in Innsbruck and Munich and his unusual talent won him recognition at an early age. At twenty-two, he was appointed professor at the Munich Conservatory The present Sextet was composed in 1885-1887 and met with instantaneous success. When Richard Strauss heard it he urged the composer to submit it to a competition in Vienna for the award of the Beethoven prize.
