Description: LOVELY ANTIQUE “SCINDE” ENGLISH FLOW BLUE DINNER PLATE BY J&G ALCOCK, CIRCA 1840s We are greatly pleased to offer this lovely “Scinde” pattern flow blue antique English dinner plate, in the most desirable and sought-after shade of vivid cobalt blue. The plate is approx. 8-3/8” across at the widest. Condition is very fine, having a deep, glossy cobalt blue color, with a tiny flea bite at one edge (see photos) and shows very well. Bottom of plate is impressed “Oriental / Stone / J. & G. Alcock”. The “Scinde” pattern of flow blue earthenware originated with brothers John & George Alcock in Staffordshire, England, circa 1830s-40s, in response to the universal European fascination at that time with all things Oriental. Flow blue is a style of white earthenware that originated in the Regency era of the 1820s among Staffordshire’s potters. The name is derived from the transfer blue glaze that blurred or "flowed" during the firing process. This lovely, original 1840s dinner plate of Staffordshire flow blue porcelain is ready to display right out of the box. It is fresh from an old local estate, where it was put away and out of sight for decades. Just this one plate (but we have also listed a couple more Scinde pieces). Buy It Now for your collection!
