Back-strips protecting the spines of each book each incorporate five raised bands. Tilting to black labels and decoration separating each panel all original gilt. Vol 1 back-strip defective [as photo]. All board exteriors and page edges harmoniously spot pattern marbled. Endpapers all West End Spot Marble. Published by Galignani, Paris, in 1822. Provenance: Lindsay of Balcarres (from heraldic device and ex libris notation to front pastedown of each volume); free from further permanent inscription and markings to the text. Although interior condition is overall good, because these original letterpress books are two centuries old, they display periodic minor signs of use and age — such as the usual discolouration to old paper — consistent with a printed objects of this era. All preliminary pages + main text are complete and otherwise correct.
