Little Women, 1880, 1872 First Edition Set, Parts 1st & 2nd, Louisa May Alcott

Here we offer a matching first edition set of Louisa May Alcott's classic, Little Women, published by her original publisher, Roberts Brothers, Boston, in 1880 and 1872, respectively. This auction includes both the first and second books, which were originally sold separately, (as the second was actually a sequel due to the popularity of the first,) each issued in gilt-impressed forest green cloth and illustrated by several artists. Part First is a 12th-year printing (first was 1868) and Part Second is a 4th-year print (first printed in 1869). Both books are in their original bindings with frayed board edges and intact endpapers. Part First has more foxing/light stains than Part Second, and its frontispiece tissue is a replacement. Two leaves in Part First (pp. 193-196) have tears repaired with acid-free binder's tissue, and page 197 has an inch-long chip near the top of the page (please see the 10th picture.) The text and illustrations are very bright and crisp. 341 and 359 pages respectively, followed by ad packets. The books measure approximately 6.75 x 5-inches.
