Volume 5 At the foundation of the great religions lie holy books – the Torah of Judaism, but Qur’an of Islam, the Vedanta of the Hindus, the Sutras of the Buddhists world – and the Restoration Scriptures of the Latter-day Saints. Not all religious books have the sacredness of scripture, but few religions survive and thrive without creating “a literature of belief.” This topic, first explored in a symposium sponsored by BYU’s Religious Studies Center, drew a dazzling array of world renowned the scholars including Joseph Campbell, master of world mythologies, P. Lal of Calcutta who spoke hauntingly of India’s folk parables, and Wing-tsit Chan who delighted audiences with his portrait of Confucian and Buddhist beliefs. Latter-day Saint scholars joined them on the program to probe Joseph Smith’s First Vision and the Articles of Faith as literature of Mormon belief. And a group of young scholars from literary and religious disciplines later contributed the exciting fruits of a typological approach to the Old Testament and the Book of Mormon, finding them mirroring the compelling image of the Christ. Seldom has the dialogue between the language of scholarship and the language of faith been so intense or sensitive. These proceedings reflect both the devotion believers feel for their scriptures and a rare respect that should mark each encounter with another’s sacred literature. The Religious Studies Center, organized in 1976 thanks to the efforts of Jeffrey R Holland, then Dean of Religious Instruction at BYU and later serving as its President, and now a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has five areas of interest: ancient studies, Church history, Judeo-Christian religions, and world religions. Under the general direction of Ellis T. Rasmussen, the Center’s work includes finding, evaluating, and collecting valuable manuscripts, documents, and artifacts, disseminating the products of scholarly research and writing through lectures, conferences, symposia, and publications, including this monograph series; and organizing productive exchanges between scholars and students of religion at BYU and elsewhere.
