Born in York in 1882, Harry Lawrence Oakley (aka Harold Oakley) studied art at York, Leeds and the Royal College of Art. He obtained an ARCA in Architecture in 1908 and began teaching drawing with the London County Council in 1910. The next two years he spent as Art Master at Worcester Royal Grammar School. He then worked on the decorations at the Peace Palace at the Hague in the Netherlands. In 1913 he had a solo exhibition in York but opened a studio in London in 1914. Whilst in the army during the war he designed his first succesful posters. After the war he became a full-time silhouette artist often working from studios in shops around the country. In addition to his work for the Underground he also designed posters and publicity for the LNER, Selfridges, Harrods and many other stores and manufacturers. He also provided illustrations for magazines such as the Bystander, Ladies' Field and Illustrated Sporting and Dramtic News. He specialized in silouette work and exhibited at the Arlington Gallery in 1935. He died in 1960.
