Description: Lionel 6820 Aerial Missile Transport Car w/ Super SCARE Original Box Click image to enlarge Description The 6820 was introduced in 1960 but appeared in only one cataloged set, the 0-27 gauge outfit 1633 Land -Sea-Air Set which was composed of all space and military items. It was also available as a separate sale item in 1960-1961. The flatcar body is painted a glossy blue with vibrant colors and the white heat-stamped lettering is bold, bright, crisp and complete. The flatcar top is virtually flawless. The paint is shiny and even throughout. The underside of the flat matches the top's condition. The metal parts appear brand new and the wheels and AAR trucks show no run time and have that factory fresh haze about them. The couplers work perfectly. All pieces of this car are original. There are no reproduction parts. The load is a specially designed helicopter with a long brown rotor blade equipped with wingtip jets and a missile rack holding two white plastic air-to-air missiles referred to as "Little John" missiles. These are held in place by a red plastic missile rack or holder. The original helicopter has no evidence of use and the red missile holder is without cracks, splits, or repairs of any kind which is a very common problem with them, and the copter tail rotor reads. "Built by Lionel." The copter's plastic windshield hasn't even yellowed with age, which many of Lionel's postwar plastic tended to do. The missile rack is the correct early version that is pictured on page 64 of Joe Algozzini's "POSTWAR LIONEL REPRODUCTION HANDBOOK GUIDE" from the Standard Committee of the Train Collectors Association from 2000. A picture from this book is provided in my description. See photo #24. The correct version missile rack is the one pictured in the left picture. This helicopter variation came only on the 6820 aerial missile transport car. The rack carried two white plastic air-to-air missiles. They were basically 44-40 missiles that came with the 6544 Missile Firing Car and 6844 Missile Carrying Car but with two modifications. There was no weight inside the missile , and a molded red tail cone was added. Original tail cones have a small blind hole in the center that reproductions do not have. THAT SMALL BLIND HOLE IS PRESENT ON THIS CAR AND IS CLEARLY PICTURED. Another way to confirm the cars originality is by the missile rack. An original missile rack has a depressed area between where the missile is held and where the rack fits over the helicopter's boom. On reproduction racks that area is flush. BOTH THESE CAN BE SEEN IN MY PICTURES. The super scarce box is all original, solid and complete with all six original flaps. It is a brick and without any markings or repairs. The perforated panel is about 90% complete and even includes the almost always missing thumb slot tab. All the flaps are original. The required 6820-11 markings are present. The box is strong, square, and sturdy, The colors are vibrant and the lettering strong and complete. There is some soiling due to age. Still a very nice and SCARCE original box in any condition. Check out the pictures. It is almost impossible to find and makes a great addition to this offering.
